Contemporary romance author C.L. Knopf joins us today to talk about jumping in head-first, and what makes her heart flutter. And wait ’til you see her adorable dogs!
C.L.’s latest book, Bali (Destination Series Book One), [Right] is available now on Amazon! And it’s FREE for Kindle Unlimited subscribers!
Tell us about you! Can you share some interesting tidbits we may not know?
My name is C.L. and I just started writing and publishing my work earlier this year. I have 2 books published and am working on 3 others. My first book took 3 months from start to finish and my second 45 days English wasn’t my first language but I prefer to read and write in English I was born and grew up in Europe until moving to the US at 16. I am a huge fan of Lana Del Rey’s Music. Even though I am a writer I’m not a fan of reading. I am superstitious.
What inspired you to start writing?
My cousin’s wife published a book on Amazon and I thought it was fascinating. I had no idea that it was something that I could achievable. So she inspired me and I grabbed my laptop and began. She helped me through the entire process from formatting to publishing. I make sure to do the same for other others now too, if they need help I am here.
Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?
I love to shop (don’t most girls?), listen to music (since it inspires my writing), jogging and traveling!
My debut novel was called ‘Unfold You’. I have learned not to let word count dictate your story. I was so determined to have at least 80,000 words that I really stressed myself out at sometimes. I did end up with close to 90,000 so I definitely made my goal but now I just write.
What is your favorite part of the writing/publishing process and why?
Creating a story and actually holding the finished product in your hands. It never gets old!
What is your most challenging part of the writing/publishing process and what do you do to make it easier?
I would probably have to say the editing. Editing is my worst enemy for sure. Tips for pushing through? None really, just push haha. Writer’s block is another and what helped me in the past is going for a run and listening to music.
What does a typical day look like for you? How do you find balance?
My day consists of taking care of my daughter, house, and dogs [Right]. I get most of my writing done at night when she is asleep (yes I have been up until 4 am writing just to get back up at 7 am – thank you coffee)
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
I didn’t have a writing career before publishing since I just jumped in head first. I guess I wish I would have written things down when I was younger because I didn’t have any lack of ideas.
What do you love about writing romance?
I’ve always loved the act of falling In love. Being able to create characters and sending them on a journey (with or without struggles, but mostly with) is amazing. When I write I sometimes don’t even know the direction they are taking until I write.
What kinds of things do you find romantic in real life? Can you share a story?
What I find romantic is when someone can completely captivate you with their words. That will make my heart flutter for sure. Nice eyes help too.
Do you read your book reviews? If so, how do they affect your writing (if at all)?
I do! I read every single one! Luckily so far they have been lovely. I did have one 4 star review which was because the reader was expecting more of an erotic romance. I write contemporary romance with some steam and make sure I file it under the correct category. I will admit it did make me a little sad but I still like to hear criticism and what people think. In some ways, I think you can grow as a writer.
What is the craziest, funniest, or most surprising thing that has happened to you since publishing your first book?
2 things. Actually while writing my second book ‘Bali’, a vacation romance, I envisioned a setting with a resort that has hits on the water with glass floors where you could see fish. About 5 chapters in I realized I was actually thinking of Bora Bora and not Bali. I ended up changing the country and couldn’t have been happier with the couple. Second thing. As I did a Facebook live video, talking to my readers about Bali, I said I couldn’t reveal the name of the second book in the series. About 5 minutes later it accidentally slipped. I was mortified. That video is still on my author page.
My latest novel is called ‘Bali’ and it is book one of the ‘Destination Series’. It’s about two people, Hannah and Callum who meet at a resort and fall I love. The story follows them after she leaves true island and the hurdles of a long distance romance.
Is there any other news you would like to share?
I am currently working on the second book in the ‘Destination Series’ and it will be called ‘London’.
I have also announced that I am planning on writing a follow-up on for my first novel ‘Unfold You’.
I will be participating in an author takeover on 28 October on Facebook. It will be a book release party for my close friends Riley King and Angelica Charles. You can contact me if you’d like the link. 8 authors participating. Anything from historic to erotic romance.
